I study the social effects of emotions, particularly among people who are prone to feel shame or highly self-critical. This includes topics like stigma, shame, compassion, ostracism, belonging, and loneliness. I also host the Research Matters Podcast, a show where I interview great researchers about how they do their thing.

I enjoy starting new organizations and scaling them up to have a larger impact. I am particularly interested in social enterprise as a way to maximize social good. My largest effort has been to co-found the Portland Psychotherapy Clinic, Research, & Training Center, a research and training clinic run as a social enterprise where profits fund scientific research.
